AOB 1 - Plan

Unit 3: Media Production (Level 3)

The title for my graphic novel is going to be ‘Gobbledegook.’ I have chosen this because I believe it to be an interesting name, it’s going to draw people into picking up the novel, because its not a title that would usually be found on a graphic novel front cover, it has an air of mystery.

The target audience for the graphic novels would be teenagers from 17+ simply because of all the references to sex, drugs and violence, these aspects would not be in a novel for somebody younger because of the CCA laws, and also when writing the storyline in more detail, I can relate to the age group because of me being the same age.
The graphic novel is going to be about 5 students who are all starting at college in September, there is going to be a brief outline of their upbringing just before they go to college, this is a chance to introduce the characters to the reader, so they can have a great understanding once the characters start college.

Because I am the only person within this production piece, I’m going to be assigned for all the roles, I thought about including other people In the creation of the graphic novel but I feel that I would work better by myself. By creating a graphic novel it would work better for me than the movie trailer, simply because of my vast knowledge within Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, and also my interest in graphic novels, so I understand what styles I’m looking for and the layouts used in different styles of graphic novels, I have created other items on Photoshop and Illustrator, such as Adverts, Double Page Spreads and front covers, so I could use my skills within this creation.

I’m going to be working in Room 41/24/44 to create this, and I’m going to be using a Mac computer, a Tablet and a Pen to create the drawings, and I’m going to use a camera, to take images, so I can draw over them artistically with other graphic novels styles in mind.

I have planned out what I am going to need to include, via a production schedule, so that I can see successfully, the deadlines I have set myself for each section.
I have also created the risk assessment form, and also the Project plan, this includes the title of my graphic novel, what i'm going to do, the roles that i've decided to take, the estimated time, and the locations and work areas that i will need in order for me to edit and take the images.

I feel that the planning I have done now, is enough to help me complete the production stage of this Unit successfully.
I feel that i can carry the knowledge that i learnt from the earlier unit, after researching different styles and types of graphic novels, this has given me the opportunity, to have a style in mind of how i would like to create mine.
I believe that i'm able to Undertake all the roles, of picture taking, editing, planning and designing.
I'm going to start planning for the Recce stage: this is where i decide the location thats going to be good for taking photographs. and that its going to be fit for purpose, also whether i have to have permission to take images there.

AOB 2 - Production Diary 9/11/09

During the past two weeks, I have been starting to create the front cover of the graphic novel, I have had to consider different textures, due to it being in the style of a notebook, for example using tea stains, and ripped textures, also, using mixed media, with drawn images and photographs.
I found it difficult to find the correct colour for the notebook, without it looking too dull, because it will need to stand out to the target audience, for them to be interested to buy it.

Today i have been creating the general outline for the inside pages, because the front cover is in the style of a notebook, i decided to make the inside like a notebook too, by scanning in an exercise book, which has been crumpled a little and dirtied to make it look used.
i then copied an image of a spiral bound, so that it looks more like a notebook.

AOB 2 - Production Diary 27/11/09

Today, i have created the front cover of the graphic novel, i had many graphic novels infront of me, and also planned out my idea, from the images i took...
i wanted the novel front cover to be simple, yet eyecatching.

Although after i created this, i felt it lacked the eyecatching factor, so i decided to have a rethink about the photo i was going to use, also the background, adding a bookshelf at the top, and also rearranging the title and author.
this is what i created.I am going to check with my client, to see if he would like to change anything.

AOB 2 - Production Diary

I have just been informed by my client that the deadline has been moved forward to the 22nd January, rather than the 12th February.

AOB 2 - Production Diary 15/12/09

This is my completed first page, and i feel that this is clear, and its easy to see the storyline.
i created this in illustrator and then copied it into photoshop to lay it out.
The first page (on the left) is an alarm going off and somebody waking up to turn it off.
the second page, is meant to be layed out in the style of a house, because it is set in a house. and also the bottom left image, is out of the frame, for the reason that its involved with the speech bubble on the first page, so i thought this would be the best way to set it out.

AOB 3 - Risk Assessments

This is a form so that i can show i have legally asked for permission off the characters that are going to star in my graphic novel.
this means that i can legally take and use images, purely for educational use, for this graphic novel.
